The name Pierre's Madness was derived from a
painting dating back to the flemish period. The painting
depicts a long-forgotten--and in most cases unnecessary--surgery being
performed on some of the most hampered patients. The surgery entailed
of several surgical incisions into the frontal lobe of the brain to sever one or
more nerve tracts. This technique formerly used to treat certain mental
disorders, now rarely performed, is known as a lobotomy.
